Reija Lang Trio is building on the alluring acoustic sound - combining influences from the Afro-American jazz legacy and the European chamber jazz wave. The delicate and rarely heard sound is created with an interesting instrumentation - vocals, guitar, double bass and violin.

The trio members belong to the top notch jazz musicians in the Finnish jazz scene. Vocalist Reija Lang with her capturing and lovely alto sound and scatting skills, guitarist Petri Krzywacki with his fine-sounding and stylish playing - teamed up with Mikko-Ville Luolajan-Mikkola - who is best known as a classical and jazz violin virtuoso and bass player with sovereign style.

Burn Out Mama: Out Of Office

Hysteric joy. Anguish. Rush. Dreams and romanticism. Worries and pleasures. Imagined monsters. Every day surprises. Welcome to the world of Burn Out Mama.

Burn Out Mama has found an apt name for the band: those three words open one possible listening-horizon, that can house the wild palette of feelings which the band's music evoke. This one really burns, with a big flame and a sense of risk. Familiar things and domestic situations can turn strange in the blink of an eye. Didn't the late Frank Zappa sing about dangerous kitchen?

But don't get me wrong: Burn Out Mama does not live at one extreme, but on a wide scope of expression. That's how things gain weight in life and in music, from opposites, like a tender moment from a violent mood. Artistically that kind of scale is very challenging for the musicians to fulfill, but Ms. Reija Lang and the band accomplish the unique expedition masterfully. The production of the album has wit and ingenious details, that peel open like an onion with each new listening.

Burn Out Mama's Out of Office actualizes one important feature of jazz's legacy, the courage to renew forms of expression in a radical manner. That doesn't mean that the album is a jazz record in any traditional sense of the term: the processed beat-box rhythms on some of the tracks mirror more something like techno. After all each listener must find her or his own stance on this music. I say it's refreshing.
